Why Lighting Is the Most Underrated Design Element
If you’ve ever walked into a room and felt instantly at ease—but couldn’t quite explain why—there’s a good chance lighting had something to do with it.
At BML Collectives, LLC, we believe lighting is more than just function. It shapes your mood, enhances textures, and defines how every object in your space is experienced. It’s not the cherry on top—it’s the cake.
Here’s how to use lighting with intention.
1. Layer, Layer, Layer
One overhead light isn’t enough. Good lighting design uses multiple layers:
-
Ambient: Ceiling fixtures or recessed lighting
-
Task: Table lamps, reading lights, vanity lights
-
Accent: Wall sconces, under-cabinet lighting, candles
Together, they make a space feel alive and flexible.
2. Warm > Cool
Opt for warm light bulbs (2700K–3000K) over bright white or blue tones. They’re softer on the eyes and instantly make a space feel cozier.
3. Choose Sculptural Fixtures
Lamps and pendants are design opportunities. A minimalist ceramic lamp or brass sconce can act as décor and light source.
4. Use Dimmers
Want to create atmosphere? Dim the lights. It’s the easiest way to shift a room from “office” to “evening unwind” without moving a single pillow.
5. Let Natural Light In
Sheer curtains, clean windows, and open layouts help maximize daylight. Don’t block what nature gives you for free.
